Don’t leave laptops unattended, even for short periods.

Purchase a portable locking device that will enable you to secure your computer to a fixed object like desks, tables, etc.

Purchase electronic tracking software for your laptop. This will assist law enforcement in locating your computer if it is missing or stolen.

Take advantage of the Public Safety Valuables Identification Program VIP – to mark your laptop, special engraving tools are available in the Public safety office.

In order to avoid waste, conserve paper and toner, and to better manage costs, ITS, assisted by a new printer advisory task force, will be studying campus printing and copying. Over the next several weeks, printer and copier vendors, accompanied by a member of the ITS staff, may be visiting your department to check your printer and copier equipment and your department usage. The vendors will be proposing solutions to the task force to lower capital and operating costs of campus printing and copiers.

The printer advisory task force is chaired by Joel Cohen, PhD, associate vice president for library & information services (cohen@canisius.edu) and has the following members:

Thomas Prince (princet@canisius.edu), computer support specialist

Ronald Haberer (habererr@canisius.edu), associate controller

Peter Schaber, PhD (schaber@canisius.edu), professor, Chemistry & Biochemistry

Margaret Kraatz (kraatzm@canisius.edu), print shop coordinator

Marc Schnirel (schnirem@canisius.edu), ITS system administrator

Larry Lichtenstein, PhD (lichten@canisius.edu), associate professor, Economics/Finance

Kimberly Noble, PhD (leavittk@canisius.edu), assistant professor, Education

Gary Lew (lew@canisius.edu), senior facilities operations manager

Frank Kirstein (kirstein@canisius.edu), director of computer infrastructure

ITS will be converting from the Novell network operating system to Microsoft’s Windows Server network operating system. The change will take place over the 2009-2010 academic year and it will provide more cost effective and reliable service, as well as improve computer performance. It will also lay the foundation for many new and exciting services that ITS will finally be able to provide including Exchange mail and calendaring, Sharepoint document collaboration, more secure wireless and remote access networks, and more.

At some point in the near future, Canisius faculty and staff members will be contacted by a member of the Academic Computing team about the conversion of office or department from Netware to Windows Server. The Academic Computing team will modify the configuration on the computers in the department so that everyone is using the Windows Server environment. None of the personal data on your computer will be lost, and you will retain access to all of your departmental data on network drives as well.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call the ITS Help Desk at Ext. 2299 or Joel A. Cohen, PhD, associate vice president for Library and Information Services at Ext. 8410. To read more about this initiative, click here.

At the end of the semester, when so many of us are cleaning out old paperwork from our offices, please take extra care to properly dispose of any paper or electronic media that contains sensitive data.

Anything that contains student grades or other personally identifiable information (including old exams, papers, and so on) should be shredded for disposal. This is a requirement of FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Similarly, any paperwork or electronic records that contain protected information such as social security numbers should also be shredded or otherwise destroyed. This includes job applications, copies of tax forms that are no longer needed, credit card slips, and so on.

If you need access to a shredder for paperwork, there is one in ITS on the ground floor of the Wehle Technology Center. If you need to dispose of electronic media, such as CDs or floppy disks, please bring them to the Help Desk, also on the ground floor of Wehle.
