Sit down dinner draws crowd

The Residence Hall Association (RHA) held its third annual Thanksgiving sit down dinner on Wednesday in the Economou Dining Hall.
Servers for the evening included RHA members, the executive board of RHA, faculty, staff and volunteers. Over 45 faculty and staff helped out, including Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Cary Anderson, Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, Director of Residence Life Matt Mulville and Associate Director of Residence Life Al Pilato.

New look for the library

Canisius has started to take steps towards renovating the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library in proposed plans that include extended library hours and a coffee shop. The proposal is the result of student and faculty collaboration.
While such plans have yet to be approved by the College, they are contingent upon a proposal in the process of being reviewed by Canisius’ vice presidents, along with the Budget Committee and the Board of Trustees. Dr. Joel Cohen, associate vice president for Library and Information Services, said that although the plans are in the process of being reviewed, they have been extremely well received by most of the College.

Students participate in conference

Four Canisius students attended a national philosophy conference at Fairfield University at the end of last month. Kyle Walker (’06), Lauren Woomer (’07), Kristen Lovejoy (graduate student) and William D’Alessandro (’06) were selected for the panel to represent the College.
The selection process involved a class of fourteen students each submitting a paper, all related to feminism in contemporary culture. The four best were chosen to go to the conference.

USA holds dinner for local residents

Residents of Hamlin Park, the area surrounding Canisius, gathered together Saturday to attend a dinner sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Association (USA).
The dinner, held in the West Wing of the dining hall, is an annual event designed to show appreciation for Canisius’ neighbors.
Student representing the USA fliered the neighborhood in the weeks before the event to advertise.

New trees planted in Quad

Approximately a month after the October snowstorm, campus cleanup and restoration efforts are continuing to produce visible results. Last week, eleven new trees were planted in the Quad to replace the ones that were damaged by the storm and subsequently removed from the premises.
According to Kevin Kwitzer of the Department of Facilities Management at Canisius, the cleanup was a campus wide effort. While the College was not decimated to the degree that heavily forested areas nearby such as Forest Lawn Cemetery were, the storm still managed claimed a total of 29 trees on campus.

Literacy Center is an asset to community

In August 2004, the Canisius College Literacy Center opened their doors to the community as a state of the art facility specializing in literacy based programs for children of surrounding neighborhoods.
A product of several years work, the center is the result of many dedicated graduate students, staff and college administrators.

Nov. 10 2006 / 12:00 p.m. / Attempted Larceny of a Motor Vehicle
Officers responded to a report of a suspicious male around vehicles parked on Humboldt and Loring. Upon officers’ arrival, the man fled and was later located in a yard on Humboldt Parkway. Suspect was arrested and charged with burglary and attempted larceny. Upon further investigation, it was discovered the suspect was recently released from prison and out on parole.
Nov. 11 2006 / 1:45 a.m. / Criminal Mischief
Public safety officers responded to a call of a person throwing beer cans on Glendale. Student reported to officers the person had thrown beer cans at his car causing a dent.
Nov. 12 2006 / 1:45 a.m. / Harassment
Student reported that she was intentionally struck by a visitor attending the Pajama Jam event in the Student Center. The suspect was apprehended by Public Safety officers and arrested.
Nov. 12 2006 / 3:00 p.m. / Criminal Mischief
Student reported the exterior door at the Main Humboldt apartments had been intentionally damaged. The glass on the door was broken.
Nov. 12 2006 / 12:00 p.m. / Petit Larceny
Student reported she left her cell phone on a table and when she returned a few moments later she discovered it missing. The phone has not been turned in to Lost and Found.

USA vice president to be elected

Due to the resignation of Luigi Rodo as president of the Undergraduate Student Association (USA), there will be an election held for a new vice president of the USA.
Former Vice President Dan Puccio has become the new USA president, which is why a replacement needs to be found.
There will be an informational session held on Nov. 20 for those who are interested in running for the position. This meeting will be held at 4 p.m. in the Senate office in the basement of the Student Center.

CSPA students win state competition

During a conference in Syracuse, Canisius students from the College Student Personnel Association, also known as CSPA, master’s degree program won awards at the annual College Student Personnel Association of New York State conference.
The conference was held from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9. There is no faculty involvement in students becoming a part of these competitions or actually competing.

It’s more than just coffee
Canisius has made the first steps toward renovating its library. These improvements would include remodeling the main floor of the building to make it more conducive to round the clock study.
All vital services would be concentrated on the main floor, which would hopefully remain open 24 hours a day.
